I have taken the time to reach out to several businesses. I have called them directly or emailed them asking if they are in need of a Web Designer.
Do you have any idea how many actually needed a new Web guy but just didn’t know where to look or didn’t know who to trust?
Let’s face it. The person who designs a website for you could have access to your hosting, domain or even payment gateway. Not only that, but a lot of time is invested in retrieving logins, sending content and reviewing content for the web designer.
So I have come up with the “Find a Web Guy” Questionnaire.
It’s designed to help you look for essential qualities in your new Web Design company.
Let’s get started.
Question #1.
The answer to this question is important. This will help determine how quickly your “guy” will respond to you when you request changes or need support.
Question #2.
This is a personal preference. Some people like communicating on the phone, email, chat or all the above. All are very effective tools. I prefer to initially speak on the phone with clients or potential clients. It is much more personal. If you are prospecting a web designer, phone communication can help determine if he/she is honest. It is much easier to BS your way through an email than through the phone.
Question #3a.
So ,you have a great idea buzzing in your head. Do feel like you are getting feedback from the conversation or is he/she side-stepping your ideas.
Question #3b.
Of course you think your idea is great. However, don’t you want an honest opinion? The web designer should consider your ideas; however, he/she needs to be able to translate them to the web. On a rare occasion, even I think I have a great idea for a website that doesn’t translate well for the web.
Question #4.
Brand recognition! Brand recognition! Brand recognition! Yes, I said it 3 times. Your logo, business cards, marketing materials and website should follow a similar color scheme. When you look at your website, you should immediately associate it with your business cards and other marketing materials. Having said that, it is also true that your business cards and marketing materials should look like your website.
Question #5.
A web designer that offers maintenance shows commitment. If he/she isn’t mentioning maintenance, it’s probably because he/she just want the initial build, and then he/she wants to jump ship. You need someone who will be there when you have problems that need to be fixed.
Question #6.
The designer should give you an estimate of when he/she will finish your website. Any designer that gives a exact timeline is not experienced or realistic. Why? Because your website’s completion will also depend upon your response to the designer when compiling your website’s content. I tell my clients, ” I work until it’s finished or when you delay giving me the content I need.” For example, how can I possibly write your “About Us” page when I don’t know you well enough or know your business? If you wait three weeks to provide the content for your “About Us” page. then you can expect your website’s completion to be delayed by three weeks. Now, that’s the honest truth.
Conclusion.
Web design and development can be a time consuming process. It does not need to be a frustrating or endless process. Your web designer is responsible for 90% of the process, so make the right decision! And don’t forget that you have 10% to give also– a very essential 10%.
My advice- if you want to build a website, be prepared. Have your content in hand, and be open to ideas.
